A Mid-2000s Flashback
In 2006, Netflix was a DVD-by-mail business where one could order the latest seasons of Prison Break and Lost, then hits for Fox and ABC. Now, Netflix is a world-conquering streaming operation with the power to put shows in front of big audiences when they’re added to its platform — shows like Prison Break and Lost. Both series (which also stream on Hulu) were added to Netflix in July and made their Nielsen streaming chart debuts soon after. Prison Break racked up 758 million minutes of viewing in its first week in the rankings, and Lost wasn’t far behind with 678 million minutes.
Minutes Watched for Originals This Year
Even as rivals spend billions on original programming, Netflix is far outpacing competitors for viewership marketshare from January to July 2024, per a Luminate report on July 19. That could be partially due to its vast subscriber lead (Netflix now has 277 million subscribers globally). Amazon's Prime Video and Paramount+ follow in terms of most-watched originals, notably outpacing Disney+'s franchise-powered service.
